Arm bars

In bouldering, "arm bars" refer to a technique where climbers use the inside of their arms to create opposing forces against the rock or holds. This is often done by pressing the forearm and elbow against one side of a feature while the hand of the same arm presses against the opposite side. The technique provides stability and support, allowing the climber to rest or move more efficiently on overhanging or off-width sections. Proper use of arm bars helps conserve energy and maintain balance.

Examples

Sarah approaches a wide crack on the bouldering wall, a perfect spot to use an arm bar. She inserts her arm and presses against one side of the crack with her elbow while her hand pushes against the opposite side. This technique offers her the stability needed to ascend. While working on a challenging off-width problem, Mark finds that finger jams aren't effective. He instead places his forearm into the crack and applies pressure, creating an arm bar to support his next move. At an outdoor boulder, Emily comes across a vertical fissure. She locks her arm in place using an arm bar, allowing her to shift her weight and advance her climb without losing balance.
