Flag
In bouldering, "flag" refers to a technique where a climber uses one leg to counterbalance and stabilize their body. This is done by extending the leg to the side or pressing it against the climbing wall, helping to maintain balance and reduce swinging, thereby using less energy and improving control during a move.
Examples
Lucy approaches a tricky problem on the bouldering wall. She notices her body swaying to one side. To maintain balance, she extends her right leg out to the side and presses it against the wall. This action helps her distribute her weight more effectively, making it easier to reach the next hold. Jake is climbing a steep overhang. He finds himself too far from the next handhold. To stay stable, he extends his left leg out to the right of his body, using the "flag" technique to counterbalance the pull of gravity. This allows him to stretch further and complete the challenging move. Emma faces a problem where she needs to move sideways on the wall. She uses her left hand to grip a hold and extends her right leg behind her, creating a bridge with her body. This flagging technique gives her the stability she needs to shift her weight and reach the next grip with her right hand.
