Flagging

Flagging is a technique used by climbers to maintain balance and reduce swinging movements. When flagging, a climber extends one leg away from the body, either pressed against the rock surface or in mid-air, to create counterbalance. This helps to stabilize the body, especially when reaching for holds that are off-center. The extended leg acts like a counterweight, enabling more controlled movements and improving overall stability on the climb.

Examples

In the middle of a challenging route, she extends her right foot out to the side, using flagging to balance her body against a steep overhang. On a tricky slab, he uses a left-side flag to keep his center of gravity steady while reaching for the next hold. During a corner climb, she flags her left leg behind her to prevent a barn door swing and maintain control.
