Fontainebleau Grade
Fontainebleau Grade is a system used to rate the difficulty of boulder problems, originating from the Fontainebleau region in France. It ranges from easy problems starting at "1" to extremely difficult problems reaching "8C" or higher. Each grade includes a plus (+) notation for variations within the same level. For example, a problem might be rated "7A+" to denote it is slightly harder than a standard "7A". This system is widely adopted and recognized in the bouldering community worldwide.
Examples
Paul travels to Fontainebleau, France, to experience the renowned outdoor bouldering site. He attempts a problem graded 6A, which translates to a moderate level challenge. He chooses this problem based on his previous experience with V grades. Sophie tackles a classic boulder problem in Fontainebleau marked at 7C. This grade indicates a highly difficult route, requiring precise movement and strength. She compares it to a V9 in the American grading system. Alex starts on a milder 4B grade problem, perfect for warming up and getting used to the sandstone boulders typical of Fontainebleau. He notes that this is similar to a V0 or V1 in the V grading system.
