Hueco Grade

In bouldering, "Hueco Grade" refers to a grading system developed at Hueco Tanks, Texas, used to measure the difficulty of boulder problems. The grades range from V0 (easiest) to V17 (hardest known), with the "V" standing for Vermin, named after the climber John Sherman whose nickname inspired the system. This system helps climbers assess the challenge level of a problem before attempting it.

Examples

The Hueco, or V Scale, is commonly used in the United States for bouldering difficulty. It ranges from V0 (easiest) to V17 (hardest). For instance, Lucas attempts a V0 problem often characterized by large holds and simple moves, excellent for beginners. In contrast, Cassidy tries a V5, which includes tricky sequences and smaller holds requiring more strength and technique. Tony, an expert, climbs a V12 with overhangs, micro-crimps, and dynamic moves, testing peak performance and experience.
