Overhang

In bouldering, "Overhang" refers to a section of a climbing route where the rock or wall angles back toward the climber, creating a challenging angle to climb. Climbers must use more upper body strength and precise technique to hold on and move upward because the slope is steeper than vertical. Overhangs often require greater core strength and advanced climbing skills due to the difficulty of maintaining grip and balance on such aggressive angles.

Examples

Josh grips the starting holds of an overhang problem. As he pulls himself up, his body hangs almost parallel to the ground. Hannah reaches the midpoint of an overhang route. She hooks her heel on a large, chalked hold, using it to stabilize her next move. Sam tackles the challenging overhang in the cave section of the gym. He carefully plots each move to conserve energy and avoid a fall. Mia successfully executes a dynamic move on an overhang. She leaps with precision, catching a small hold above her with one hand.
