Pocket

In bouldering, a "pocket" refers to a hold on a climbing route that consists of a hole or depression in the rock. Climbers use their fingers to grip the inside of the pocket. Pockets can vary in size, accommodating one finger (mono pocket), two fingers (bi-pocket), or more. These holds require precise finger placement and can be challenging, often demanding finger strength and careful technique.

Examples

While climbing, Alex reaches for a "pocket" hold. This deep, round indentation in the rock barely accommodates two of his fingers. On another route, Mia encounters a shallower pocket, requiring her to crimp with just one finger, forcing her to be precise with her movements. In the gym, Jake trains on synthetic walls featuring various pockets, improving his finger strength and technique.
