Start Hold
In bouldering, the "Start Hold" is the specific handhold or foothold from which a climber begins their route. It is marked on the climbing wall, often with tape or a designation in the problem's description. Climbers must establish both hands or a combination of hands and feet on these holds before moving to other holds on the problem. Properly using the start hold is essential for following the intended sequence and grade of the boulder problem.
Examples
Laura starts her climb by grabbing the clearly marked start holds, positioning her feet carefully to maintain balance. Jake finds the start holds on the overhang, one being a small crimp and the other a decent jug, giving him the leverage needed to pull himself off the ground. At the bouldering competition, competitors must have both hands and feet on the designated start holds before proceeding with their climb. Sarah examines the start holds, which include a sloper for her left hand and a side pull for her right, planning her first moves meticulously. Oliver notices that the start holds are close to the ground, requiring him to crouch low and make an explosive first move to reach the next hold.
