Twistlocks

In bouldering, twistlocks refer to a technique where the climber rotates their body to reach distant holds. This method involves twisting the torso, often with one arm extended and the opposite foot pushing against a foothold. The twistlock allows the climber to maintain balance and minimize strain on the shoulders and arms while reaching for holds that would otherwise be out of reach. It enhances stability and control during demanding moves.

Examples

Sarah approaches the boulder problem with a series of twistlocks. She grabs a small crimp with her right hand while turning her hips to the left, creating tension in her body. This allows her to reach up with her left hand to a higher hold. John encounters a steep overhang. He uses a twistlock by securing a side pull with his left hand and twisting his body right, maintaining stability. This locked position enables him to reach for the next hold with his right hand efficiently. Emily is halfway through a challenging route. To conserve energy, she employs a twistlock on an undercling. She twists her hips and shoulders, transferring weight to her legs. This helps her stabilize and reach comfortably for the next hold without losing balance.
