Mantle

In lead climbing and sports climbing, a mantle is a climbing technique used to surmount a ledge or shelf. The climber employs a pressing motion, similar to getting out of a swimming pool without using a ladder. The climber first places their hands on the ledge, then pushes downward to lift the body upwards, and finally brings a foot up to gain stability and complete the move. This technique requires both upper body strength and balance.

Examples

In lead climbing and sports climbing, a mantle occurs when the climber must utilize a technique similar to getting out of a swimming pool without a ladder. It often involves pushing down on the holds, while simultaneously moving the feet up to gain balance and continue climbing. For instance, when approaching a ledge, the climber may first place both hands on the ledge, then push down to lift their body upwards, finally moving the feet up to stabilize and stand. This move is essential for overcoming certain features on the rock face, especially flat or sloped surfaces.
